How we compared these apps
We used each app's own store listing and official site to confirm platform support and which features sit behind a paywall. We did not install and rank these apps by hands-on testing; the comparison below is based on official information and public documentation, checked 21 September 2026.
1. Official Geocaching app (Groundspeak)
This is the geocaching.com operator's own app. Free features include live search for nearby caches, full cache descriptions with hints and attributes, navigation by map or compass, messaging other geocachers, and finding easy Traditional geocaches and events.
What needs Premium inside the app: Premium-only caches, filtering by size, type, difficulty, terrain and Favorite points, offline saving of cache details, and notifications for newly published caches near you.
Who it suits: anyone who wants one official app that also lets them upgrade to Premium later without switching apps.

c:geo is completely free with no in-app purchase tier. It includes a live map using Google Maps or OpenStreetMap, cache search by various criteria, online or offline logging of finds, waypoint creation and management, and offline caching so cache details are available without a signal.
What it does not do: it cannot unlock Premium-only caches on geocaching.com; that gating is controlled by geocaching.com's own account system, not by which app you use. It is Android-only, so it is not an option on iPhone.
Who it suits: Android users who want offline maps and more granular filtering of whatever caches their account can already see, without paying for a second app.

Adventure Lab lets you create, play, and share outdoor (and some indoor) scavenger hunts called Adventures, guiding you through clues and Locations rather than a hidden physical container. You can create a free account and start an Adventure with no other commitment. There are more than 50,000 public Adventures worldwide, and the app supports localization in 29 languages. If you link your geocaching.com username, completed stages count toward your regular geocaching statistics and total finds.
What it does not do: it is not a substitute for finding Premium-only Traditional caches, and it does not require or replace a geocaching.com Basic or Premium account.
Who it suits: people who want a guided, puzzle-style outdoor activity today, including places without a dense network of physical caches.

Third-party clients such as Cachly (iOS) exist as paid alternatives with their own feature sets built on top of a geocaching.com account. We are not covering paid apps in detail here since this page is specifically about free options; if you already pay for Premium and want a different interface, checking a paid app's own feature list against your Premium account is worth doing before buying.

Can I use more than one of these apps with the same account?
Yes. The official app and c:geo both work with a geocaching.com account, so your Basic or Premium status carries over between them. Adventure Lab uses its own account but can be linked to your geocaching.com username.
Does c:geo require a geocaching.com account?
Yes, to load real cache data and log finds you connect it to a geocaching.com account (Basic or Premium); the app itself is free regardless of which membership tier that account has.
Is Adventure Lab a good substitute if there are few physical caches near me?
It can be, since Adventures do not require a physical container and can be placed indoors, but it is a different activity type from traditional geocaching rather than a direct replacement.
