Geocaching itself has never required payment. What costs money is a Premium membership that unlocks extra caches and features. Here is exactly what you can do for free, and where the free path actually stops.

Create a free Basic membership on geocaching.com, install the free official Geocaching app or the free open-source app c:geo, and go find a Traditional cache near you. Basic membership lets you find easy Traditional caches and attend events; it does not unlock every cache type, difficulty and terrain filter, or offline maps. Those sit behind Premium, which costs money.

Free ways to start geocaching
1 Geocaching.com Basic membership
Basic membership on the official geocaching.com site is free and stays free; it is not a trial. It lets you search the map, find easy Traditional geocaches and attend geocaching events, log trackables, and message other players.

- No access to Premium-only caches, no Adventure Lab starting locations through the site's own gating, no advanced filters (difficulty, terrain, size, favorite points), no offline lists or trail maps.

- Free, ongoing.
2 Official Geocaching app (free tier)
The free tier of the official Geocaching app (published by Groundspeak) includes live search, cache descriptions, hints and attributes, navigation by map or compass, messaging other players, and finding easy Traditional geocaches and events.
- Limits
- Premium-only caches, filtering by size/type/difficulty/terrain, offline saving, and new-cache notifications are Premium features inside the same app.
- Cost
- Free download; Premium subscription is optional inside the app.
3 c:geo (free, open source, Android)
c:geo is an independent, open-source Android app that works with geocaching.com data (unofficial) and offers basic support for other geocaching platforms. It includes a live map, cache search, online and offline logging, waypoint management, and offline caching for use without a signal.
- Limits
- It is not the official app, so support and new-feature timing depend on the open-source project, not Groundspeak. iOS is not supported.
- Cost
- Free, no in-app purchase tier.
4 Adventure Lab (free app and account)
Adventure Lab is a separate free app from the Geocaching HQ team. You create a free account and can start an Adventure immediately, with no Premium purchase involved. Adventures guide you through clues and Locations rather than a hidden physical cache, and there are more than 50,000 public Adventures worldwide. If you link it to a geocaching.com username, completed Adventure stages count toward your regular geocaching finds.
- Limits
- Adventure Lab is its own product; it does not give you access to Premium-only Traditional caches on geocaching.com.
- Cost
- Free.
5 Free local geocaching events
Geocaching events are listed on geocaching.com and are open to players at any membership level, including Basic. They are one of the few ways a Basic member can log a cache-type find without needing Premium.

- Depends on events actually happening near you; frequency varies a lot by region.
- Cost
- Free to attend (some private club meetups may differ; check the individual listing).
6 Geocaching Premium free trial (a limit to know, not a long-term free path)
Geocaching.com offers a free trial of Premium membership. It gives temporary access to Premium-only caches and filters. It is time-limited and reverts to Basic afterward, so it does not replace a genuinely free account for ongoing use.

- Time-limited; one-time use per account, per the operator's own trial page.

- Free for the trial period, then Premium pricing applies if you continue (one year listed at $39.99, or $6.99 monthly, per geocaching.com at time of check).

Which free app should you install first?
If you want the operator's own app with the fewest moving parts, start with the free tier of the official Geocaching app. If you have an Android phone and want more control (offline maps, more detailed filtering of what you already have access to), c:geo is a strong free alternative, maintained as open source rather than by Groundspeak itself. Prefer a digital outdoor game over a physical cache database?
MapRaiders is a game from our own studio that combines real-world walking, running or cycling with territory strategy on a shared map, plus a collectible card game with commanders and decks that can also be played entirely at home in a card arena. It is not a geocaching app and it does not use a physical cache database: instead of finding a hidden container, you claim territory by moving outdoors and then defend or expand it through card battles. Finding geocaches with a Basic membership is free and does not expire. What costs money is Premium membership, which unlocks Premium-only caches, filters, and offline features. You never have to buy anything to place your first Basic account and find an easy Traditional cache.
